Baby Food ADHD/Autism Lawsuits

Has your child been diagnosed with severe ADHD or autism after consuming baby foods that tested positive for high levels of toxic heavy metals?

Congressional Investigation Reveals High Toxic Metals in Baby Food

A 2020 U.S. House of Representatives investigation uncovered elevated levels of arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury in several well-known baby food brands. Internal company testing reportedly confirmed the presence of these metals in:

  • Beech-Nut®
  • Gerber®
  • Hain Celestial Group – Earth’s Best Organic®
  • Nurture – Happy Family Organics and HappyBABY®
  • Plum® Organics
  • Sprout Foods – Sprout Organic Food
  • Walmart – Parent’s Choice™

Even minimal exposure to heavy metals can severely impact a child’s neurological development. Because babies’ and toddlers’ brains and nervous systems are still maturing—and because their bodies cannot efficiently eliminate these metals—such contaminants pose a heightened health risk.

Studies Confirm Alarming Levels of Toxic Metals

In 2019, the nonprofit organization Healthy Babies Bright Futures published a pivotal study on baby foods, discovering that 95% of tested products contained toxic metals. Of the 168 items reviewed, only nine were free of dangerous contaminants such as arsenic, lead, cadmium, or mercury.

Both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) identify these substances as harmful, especially for children. WHO even classifies arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury among its top 10 chemicals of major public health concern.

Comparisons to Adult Drinking Water Standards

For bottled water consumed by adults, the FDA and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allow the following maximum levels (in parts per billion, ppb):

  • Inorganic arsenic: 10 ppb
  • Cadmium: 5 ppb
  • Lead: 5 ppb
  • Mercury: 2 ppb

By contrast, the House reports uncovered levels in baby food up to:

  • 91 times the acceptable arsenic level for adults
  • 69 times the acceptable cadmium level for adults
  • 177 times the acceptable lead level for adults
  • 5 times the acceptable mercury level for adults

These numbers are based on the companies’ own testing, indicating that manufacturers knew of these toxic metal levels but continued to sell their products. (Beech-Nut later recalled certain rice cereal lots in June 2021 and announced it would stop selling rice cereal altogether. Similarly, Maple Island, which produces Walmart’s Parent’s Choice baby food, issued a voluntary recall in October 2021.)
